Installation Considerations for U4 Shareware
============================================

This document convers installation of any U4 shareware program. For
specific help on operating the program you have downloaded, see the
"ReadMeXX.txt" file (where XX are the initials of the program).

To register, see file "RegistU4.txt".

Win3.1 and Win95
----------------

If using File Manager make sure the current directory is set to that of
the executing .EXE.

With Win95 the U4 chessboard can sometimes get stuck in the task bar. The
solution is to right-click elsewhere on the bar--then maximize. (Do this
while "Chess Display Board" appears in the task bar.)

For Norton Desktop you should set the Start-up directory for any U4
desktop icon.

Installation
------------

Beginning with the series of U4 uploads posted on or after January 1997
there are some considerations to be followed when installing programs. The
programs will recognize each other and object if old or unvalidated
versions are found on the system. It's best to install all new programs in
a single directory that is clear of any outdated versions.

Important: unless you are already registered, remove any old U4 shareware
programs from your system.

New downloads are for evaluation purposes only and will typically expire
in 60 days. Please register (see RegistU4.txt) whenever you intend to keep
a program.

It is important that a first installation be carried out correctly and it
is recommended that a new directory be created for all new U4 downloads.
Once the first program is installed things become less critical--but
remember to always replace any old keyfile (U4KF.txt) with the new keyfile
that came with the (next) program downloaded and installed.

Likewise, after unzipping, programs should be "moved," not copied.
(Programs can be copied as "Shortcuts" in Win95.)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Typical first-installation procedures to avoid problems:

	NORMAL.ZIP downloaded from Net

	    > move normal.zip c:\cleandir\normal.zip
	    > cd\cleandir
	    > pkunzip normal.zip

		*OR*

NORMAL.ZIP unzipped in any directory, then, from the directory...

	    > move normal.exe c:\cleandir\normal.exe
	    > move u4kf.txt c:\cleandir\u4kf.txt
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Using an entirely empty directory is not necessary if there are no other
U4 programs already on the directory. Also, once the first U4 program has
been installed, other U4 installations can follow. Just remember to "move"
(if necessary) -- not "copy" -- and use the latest keyfile.

You will find the U4 system much easier to use if all programs are in a
single directory.
